Welcome

Welcome to our August, 2005 Quark IT Newsletter.

Well, it looks like NASA is back in business! Congratulations to Andy Thomas and the rest of the STS-114 crew and support personnel for getting the Shuttle program back in space and safely back to Earth.

We revisit Microsoft AntiSpyware this month. I don't think Microsoft will like this revisit, however we don't believe in hiding anything from our clients. We also summarise our SBS 2003 series.

After the last couple of rather heavy CPU-related articles, we'll chill out a little this month with some Microsoft Office tips that you can use.

If you'd like more information about anything covered in this newsletter, please contact Quark IT.

The Latest Malware Information
Microsoft (Anti?)Spyware

I was hoping not to have to write this particular piece this month, but it looks like Microsoft AntiSpyware is fast becoming a useless - no dangerous - piece of software to have installed on your computer.

Microsoft has been in talks recently with the intention of buying a known adware vendor called "Claria" (remember the Gator adware?) and it seems that these talks have tainted their AntiSpyware application to the point where a number of known adware and spyware vendors including Claria, WhenU, New.net, Webhancer and eZula TopText are now detected, but Microsoft's recommendation is not to remove, but ignore this malware.

It seems that Microsoft is very schizophrenic when it comes to spyware - they bought Giant AntiSpyware, called it Microsoft AntiSpyware, chose to recommend that you ignore much of the current adware, and then release an essay called "Bring Spyware Out of the Shadows" in which they appear to support relatively tough new proposed US antispyware bills.

Until Microsoft amends this mindnumbingly stupid decision, Quark IT cannot recommend that Microsoft AntiSpyware be considered a serious anti spyware tool. CounterSpy is the current leader in the AntiSpyware detection race and Trend has recently bought InterMute and their CWShredder application, so let's keep an eye on Trend in the AntiSpyware market - I just hope they do better with this that they are doing with their AntiVirus application.

I can say that I'm more disgusted than surprised at this move from Microsoft. And rather disappointed. I also know that I am far from being the only one who feels this way.

Top 5 Threats (July, 2005)
Virus   Count
1. HTML/Phishing.gen trojan 4 543 722
2. Win32/Netsky.Q worm 634 064
3. Win32/Netsky.D worm 147 017
5. Win32/Zafi.B worm 114 961
4. Win32/Netsky.Z worm 89 219

Alternatives that don't suggest ignoring spyware

Fortunately, the world of AntiSpyware is still rather well populated and products such as CounterSpy, Privacy Expert, AdAware, Spy Sweeper and Trend Micro Anti-Spyware exist that will be able to perform the tasks that Microsoft's AntiSpyware no longer wants to perform - actually detecting and removing spyware. NOD32 also does a quite decent job of stopping a number of spyware threats.

Entertainment In The Smart Home
Home Theatre systems

Home entertainment technology has changed significantly in the past sixteen years. Since 1989, we have witnessed considerable advances in audio and video product development. The humble 'telly' has been sidelined by the introduction of Home Theatre. With the invention of DVD, digital Home Theatre has presented the option of big screen, multi-speaker entertainment in our lounge rooms, with quality and convenience unlike anything we had experienced before. With a potential for better sound and picture quality than the local cinema coupled to our increasingly busy lifestyles, Home Theatre has become an expected inclusion in most new homes.

This revolution didn't stop with DVD. On January 1st, 2001, the first free-to-air broadcast of Digital Television began in Australia. Three years later, digital Pay TV services were launched in the capital cities. Improvements in hard-disk technology and more efficient digital music formats have given us the ability to store our entire music collection on a single unit that can distribute music throughout the home, or be fully portable so our music can go with us when we are on the run. Even the PC has made it into the lounge room. With Microsoft bringing out Windows Media Center Edition and its capability for playback and recording of HDTV, digital music and DVD, in addition to playback of streaming video and audio, we are likely seeing a new genesis in digital home entertainment.

Even more choice

In 2005, we have access to more forms of home entertainment technology than any of us would have imagined sixteen years ago. The question is, with all the format options and the myriad of devices on the market, how do we make this technology flexible and easy enough to use so as to simply entertain us? The answer: a thoughtfully designed Smart Home system.

Microsoft Office 2003 Tips (Part I)
Currency symbols

We have a dollar sign on our keyboards, but no pound or euro symbol (some new keyboard have a euro symbol added to the "5" key, accessible only if you are using a European keyboard layout). To enter a euro symbol in Word, just press Ctrl+Alt+E and elsewhere in Windows, hold the Alt key down and enter the following numbers on the numeric keypad: 0128. To enter a British pound symbol, you need to type Alt+0163, and to enter the cents symbol, use Alt+0162. It's not pretty, but it works!

Changing worksheets in Excel

If you have an Excel spreadsheet with multiple worksheets (these appear as tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet), the fastest way to move between them is to Ctrl + Page Down to move backwards and Ctrl + Page Up to move forwards. When you reach one end, it will cycle back to the other end.

Cell formatting in Excel

Do you often change the formatting of a cell or selection of cells in Excel? Instead of using the mouse to go to Format/Cells, you could use the keyboard shortcut of Ctrl+1 (the "1" key above the letter keys).

Resend an email in Outlook

If you need to resend an email, just go to the Sent Items folder, open the email and then have a look in the Actions menu for the Resend This Message option.

PowerPoint mind meld

Have you ever noticed when giving a presentation that the audience's attention is locked onto the PowerPoint slide instead of looking at you while you are explaining a complex point? An easy way to break this mind meld with the projector screen is to press either the "b" key to turn the screen black, or the "w" key to turn it white. Pressing it again returns you to your presentation.

General shortcuts

Here are some keyboard shortcuts that can be used to replace operations usually done with the mouse:
  • Ctrl+O (uppercase letter O) - File Open dialog box
  • Ctrl+S - File Save dialog box
  • Ctrl+P - print the current document
  • Ctrl+A - select all items (text, etc)
  • Ctrl+X - cut the highlighted item(s)
  • Ctrl+C - copy the highlighted item(s)
  • Ctrl+V - paste the clipboard contents

Tips for Microsoft Office for Mac users

If you have been using Microsoft Outlook for Mac and wish to migrate to Microsoft Entourage, you can use this tool from Microsoft to import the Outlook .pst into Entourage.

Just as with Outlook 2003 for Windows, Entourage has an inbuilt Junk Mail Filter. To upgrade the filter rules - the definitions of what should be considered spam - please download and install this file from Microsoft.

SBS 2003 - the bigger guys want it too

SBS 2003 is a very cost effective and powerful product. Since the release of SBS 2003 lot of large corporations have realised this and have raised their voice wanting a similar product for their space. Microsoft has listened and has recently announced a Medium Business Server product (due in the not too distant future).

This Medium Business Server will be based on the feature set and tight integration of the Small Business Server 2003 product, however removing the 75 user limit that is imposed on SBS 2003 and a making few other changes to make it suitable for the larger, physically diverse networks that exist in the medium to large business environment. See, the small guys are not always the last to benefit from technology. :)

SBS 2003 for your network

As you have seen in this series of articles, SBS 2003 is not your average server platform. It will save you money in the long run, by improving operational efficiency and reducing maintenance costs across not only the server BUT also for all of your workstations as well. To put it simply Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 is the smart choice for today’s ultra-competitive business environment.

If you think that you could benefit from installing Microsoft SBS 2003 or even a Windows Server 2003 network, please contact us and we will arrange a time to evaluate your requirements to determine a networking solution that will meet your specific needs.

Microsoft Licensing - Introduction

Microsoft currently has a number of licenses that you can obtain to use their software. The sheer number of products Microsoft produces is enough to make one's head spin, but then you need to multiply this by the number of licensing methods each product can support to get a true idea of how complicated this can be.

We will give an introduction to Microsoft Licensing and what the implications of the various licenses mean to your business.

Business Websites

Just like a Yellow Pages or magazine advertisement, your business website is a marketing tool. All of these advertisements reach different market segments.

Unlike other most other forms of advertising, your website can be reached 24 hours a day 7 days a week by people all around the world. We will discuss some strategies that you may wish to consider so your website brings the greatest benefit to your business.

Signing off

Well, that's it for the August 2005 Quark IT Newsletter.

Spyware is becoming a bigger and bigger problem on the Internet (and obviously in a growing number of networks). It has been recently reported that approximately 8% of the traffic travelling across the Internet backbone (the major Internet pipes) is from spyware calling home. Spyware, it appears, is definitely the new black!

Microsoft has now enforced their "Windows Genuine Advantage" program for updates, bug fixes and variously freely downloadable applications. Basically, this is where Microsoft asks to confirm that you have a legitimate copy of Windows XP before they will allow you to download anything other than security updates. Quark IT agrees that this type of confirmation of legitimate software will assist in reducing piracy of Windows XP and cannot see anything draconian about this. Of course, Microsoft didn't get this right first go and within the first week there were three ways this tool could be bypassed. Microsoft needs to make sure the next version of this tool is not easily bypassed like this version is before it will become a useful anti-piracy tool.

On top of this Windows Genuine Advantage issue, some of this month's security patches were released with an invalid digital certificate that meant they were unable to be installed. This was fixed just over 24 hours after the original broken patch was released. It seems like Microsoft is having some rather serious quality control issues this month.
