Page 2 of 2 Web Beacons Comparing web beacons to cookies, we've now found something to be a bit concerned about. Whilst a cookie generally is used by only the one website, web beacons are electronic files that enable cookies to be shared amongst members of some form of collective, such as a group of companies with websites that belong to an advertising affiliate. These are the things that you don't want to allow to run on your computer. Cookies can be made bad by web beacons and the companies that allow their cookies to be shared with other advertising affiliates. Web beacons are also known as web bugs and clear gifs. Advertising Opt Outs Aside from having to implement advert blocking technology on your firewall or filtering/proxy server, there are some advertising sites that allow you to opt out of their targeted advertising. The majority of web advertisers use shared cookies and/or web beacons to track your browsing and general Internet habits.
